For the second-straight year, University of Wyoming student-athletes attended local elementary schools to participate in the "Reading with the Pokes" program.

On Read Across America Day on March 3, 2014, more than 40 Cowboy and Cowgirl student-athletes participated in the second annual reading program, which included outreach efforts at Linford Elementary, Snowy Range Academy and Beitel Elementary. Organized by the Office of Academic Support, the program involved UW student-athletes going to local elementary schools in Laramie and participating in a reading event sponsored by First Lady Carol Mead in Cheyenne in December 2013.

"This is a great opportunity for our student-athletes to get out in the community schools and be role models for local kids," said Steven Cox, an academic coordinator in the Office of Academic Support. "Our student-athletes can make a lasting impression to motivate others to strive to be successful. This opportunity also allows our student-athletes to give children a chance to see sports they may not otherwise see."

The student-athletes also helped at Indian Paintbrush Elementary School with the "Jump Rope for Heart" program. In addition to reading with the children, the student-athletes answered questions about themselves and their teammates, the sport in which they participate and what they enjoy most about being a Wyoming student-athlete.

"When the student-athletes showed up, you should have seen the smiles on the faces of the kids," said Jamie Huston, a physical education teacher at Indian Paintbrush. "Seeing all of them interact brought a smile to my face. I know the kids will remember that day for a long time. I think that shows a lot about the kind of student-athletes you have at the University of Wyoming. I am proud to call myself a Wyoming fan."
