An All-America wrestler, an outstanding basketball player, and two dedicated students are the winners of the 2013 Admiral Land Award and Trophy. The presentations were made at Saturday's Wyoming-Air Force Homecoming football game. This year's award co-winners are All-America wrestler Alfonso Hernandez and Cowgirl Basketball standout Chaundra Sewell, and the trophy co-winners are Katie Stout and Steven Sundberg.

The Admiral Land Award is presented to the student-athlete who has completed his or her Wyoming competition during the preceding academic year and demonstrated outstanding achievement in intercollegiate competition, exemplary personal conduct on and off the field, and maintained academic standing with satisfactory progress toward a degree. The Admiral Land Trophy is awarded to the student (non-athlete) who has done the most to promote Intercollegiate Athletics at the University during the previous school year.

A two-time All-America wrestler and winner of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, Alfonso "Fonz" Hernandez finished his career with the eighth most victories in Cowboy history. He earned All-Western Wrestling Conference in 2012 and 2013. Hernandez graduated in the spring of 2013 with a degree in Kinesiology and Health Promotion and a grade point average of 3.65. He was also a two-time Academic All-American, a three-time member of the WWC All-Academic team, and a two-time member of the WWC Coaches Honor Roll. His teammates and coaches honored him with the Steven Suder High-Point Award in 2012-13, the 2010 Joe Dowler Cowboy Up Award, and the 2013 Everett Lantz Most Outstanding Wrestler Award. This fall, Hernandez joined the Cowboy Wrestling Staff as the assistant director of player development.

An All-Conference First Team and All-MW Defensive Team honoree, Sewell led the Cowgirls in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots as a senior, averaging 15.3 points and 9.3 rebounds and leading the team to a 24-8 overall record and a berth in the WNIT Tournament. She earned Second Team All-Conference and Mountain West All-Defensive honors as a junior, and Honorable Mention All-Conference as a sophomore. She is one of twenty players in school history to score over 1,000 points in her career and ranks 13th all-time in points scored. She recorded 23 career double-doubles, which is ninth in school history. A four-year Cowgirl letterwinner, Sewell was a four-time Academic All-MW and Scholar Athlete selection during her career. As a senior, she was named the MW Scholar Athlete of the Year and earned Capitol One Academic All American Third Team honors. Sewell also held the title of Mountain West SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee) Chair and was chosen by the Mountain West as the 2013 NCAA Woman of the Year conference representative. Sewell majored in Pre-Pharmacy and is currently attending the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy.

A leader among her fellow students, she goes above and beyond her call of duty. She is accountable, trustworthy and loyal and a positive part of the sports medicine staff.

Steven Sundberg has been a student manager for the football team since 2009. A senior majoring in Mechanical Engineering, Sundberg has a 3.8 gpa. The Admiral Land awards have been a special part of Homecoming since 1953. They are given as a tribute to distinguished UW alumnus Admiral Emory S. Land, class of 1898. Land was a World War II Shipping Administrator and head of the U.S. Maritime Service. At UW, he was a member of the first football team and four of the first five teams in school history.
