FORT COLLINS, Colo. (Oct. 6, 2017) – The Wyoming tennis team had a solid start to begin the first day of play at the Jon Messick Invite on Friday afternoon.
"I thought we were pretty sluggish to start the day, but definitely picked it up as the day went on," head coach
Dean Clower said. "I thought in singles we played our style but needed to be a little more disciplined in our decision making."
In doubles action, the team of
Harsha Challa and
Ana Tkachenko defeated Annabella Bonadonna and Margarita Timakova of Iowa State, 6-2, while
Milka Genkova and
Magdalena Stencel dropped their match against Priscilla Palermo and Alyssa Grijalva of Colorado State, 6-2.
The Cowgirls went 4-0 in singles action to cap off the day. Stencel was leading Anna Battersby, 6-3, 1-0, before her opponent retired followed by Challa with a straight set win, 6-3, 6-4, over Madeline Doherty. Genkova won her only singles match of the day with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Jana Lazarevic of South Dakota while Tkachenko closed things out with a 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 win over Habiba Aly of South Dakota.
Play will resume tomorrow morning beginning at 9 a.m. MT at the University Tennis Complex in Fort Collins.
