COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Mountain West announced its Spring 2017 Academic All-Mountain West team on Monday, with a record 96 University of Wyoming student-athletes from winter and spring sports receiving recognition for their academic performance during the 2016-17 academic year. The total marks an improvement from the 70 UW student-athletes who were named to the Spring 2016 Academic All-MW Team, and breaks the previous record of 86 student-athletes set in 2015.
Wyoming’s 96 honorees tied with Fresno State for the third-highest total among Mountain West institutions. New Mexico placed 128 student-athletes on the Academic All-MW Team, while 111 Boise State athletes were honored. A total of 986 student-athletes from the conference earned Spring 2017 Academic All-MW honors.
The 96 student-athletes to receive Academic All-MW honors included 26 from women’s swimming & diving, 22 from women’s track & field, 14 from men’s track & field, 12 from women’s basketball, seven from men’s golf, six from women’s golf, five from tennis and four from men’s basketball.
The 12 honorees from the Cowgirl basketball team was tops in the conference for the sport, adding an impressive academic accomplishment to their successful season on the court. The seven honorees from the men’s golf team also led the league, while the Cowgirl golf team’s six honorees tied with New Mexico for the top spot in the Mountain West.
The 26 honorees from the Cowgirl swimming & diving squad ranked second in the Mountain West behind Fresno State, whose women’s swimming & diving team collected 27 honors. Meanwhile, the CBI-winning Cowboy basketball team tied for second in the league with four Academic All-MW honors. The Cowgirl track & field team was fourth in the conference with a total of 22 honors, while the Cowboy track & field team was sixth in the league with 14 individuals receiving recognition. The Cowgirl tennis team was tied for eighth in the Mountain West with five honors.
To earn Academic All-Mountain West honors, a student-athlete must have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better, been either a starter or significant contributor to their team, and must have completed at least one academic term at their institution.
