Ask the Cowboys: John Murdock

Leading up to the start of Wyoming men’s golf’s 2017 spring season, our ‘Ask the Cowboys’ series will include features on each member of the team. The third installment is an interview with sophomore John Murdock, a native of Laramie, Wyo.

Hats or visors?
I’ve always been a hats kind of guy. My dad started me on the game and he always wore a hat so I tried to be like him.

What is your favorite ball marker?
I have a Paradise Valley Country Club ball marker from Casper, Wyoming. I use it because I won my first junior
tournament on the Wyoming Junior Golf Tour there and it has really good memories.

Do you have any superstitions?
I have plenty of superstitions. One of my main ones was that I always thought it was bad luck to keep your score in a practice round the day before a tournament.

What is your pet peeve?
My pet peeve is when I three putt. It’s one of the worst feelings to me and it nags me when I think about it after a round.

What is your favorite golf moment?
I think my favorite golf moment was playing in the last couple groups at CU’s tournament in the fall because I really felt the exhilaration of being in contention as a team to win the tournament. That team camaraderie really made that moment special, playing the last few holes knowing that we had a chance to take the title.

What is your favorite music genre?
I love rap to the core of me. I really enjoy trying to listen to the lyrics of some of these artists and how they are geniuses at using lyrics to convey so many different meanings. I really enjoy the beats themselves but the meaningful lyrics make it that much more interesting to me.

What is your favorite club in your bag?
My favorite club in my bag has to be my sand wedge. There is no rhyme or reason as to why I say that, but there is nothing better than having a nice sand wedge into a par 4.

What course do you enjoy playing the most?
My favorite course is Tradition, which is an Arnold Palmer design, and we are so lucky to get to play there when we go to our tournament out in California. The vibe there is truly special considering that it has so many close connections to The King.

What is a strange habit you have?
I have a strange habit of making sure that I get my routine right when I write my score down during a round. I always walk to the next hole and put my glove on and then write the score. I feel a comfort zone when I get my routines right during a tournament round.

What is one of your hobbies?
One of my hobbies is playing the violin. I played it seriously from third grade until I graduated high school. It is hard to play it so far in college just because of how busy I am. I truly love it and feel a deep connection to it.

Who is the funniest person on the team?
I think our whole team has a really good and humorous time when we are together. I would say Ryan Wallen is hilarious because of his sarcasm, but Cole Bundy always makes me laugh super hard.

‘Ask the Cowboys’ will continue tomorrow, featuring an interview with redshirt-freshman Dan Starzinski.
