LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 22, 2016) — The Wyoming women’s basketball team won its third straight game with a 39-point victory, 79-40, over the Adams State Grizzlies on Tuesday night.
Juniors Liv Roberts and Natalie Baker led the Cowgirls with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Redshirt sophomore Bailee Cotton finished with a team-high nine rebounds plus nine points while sophomore Rachelle Tucker added nine points and a career- high eight rebounds. “There are always things to work on for every game. We knew they would run zone and it was a chance what we wanted out of a zone for 40 minutes,” head coach Joe Legerski said. “Adams State plays very aggressively and makes you have to make basketball plays. It will be a great experience moving forward with this game. The other positive was that Liv (Roberts) played extremely well. She twisted an ankle early and you could see a lull in our team. She gives us such great energy and we make a lot of things happen through her. We talked about not shooting so many threes, happy we took only 21 not happy with the 6-21. We have some work to do in shooting the basketball. The last group who played in the fourth quarter out scored their opponent which was important from this game compared to the last. They moved the basketball and did what we wanted to offensively.”
Adams State was led by Brianna Reyna who had ten points and three rebounds off the bench. Nicole Broyles-Mortensen added nine points and a team-high four rebounds. The Grizzlies shot 13-of-44 (.295) from the field but committed 21 turnovers.
Wyoming extended the lead to 23, 44-21, through the first media timeout out of the halftime break. The Cowgirls held Adams State to just three points the remainder of the quarter to take a 55-24 advantage after three. In the fourth quarter, UW went on a 14-8 run to make it 69-32 with 5:16 left on the clock. The teams played even down the stretch as Wyoming earned the 79-40 victory.
The Cowgirls got off to a great offensive start through the first part of the game building a 14-2 advantage. A field goal by Ryena ended a five and a half minute scoring drought for Adams State, but UW scored six of the next nine to take a 20-7 lead after one. The Cowgirls held the Grizzlies to 2-of-11 (.182) shooting in the first quarter compared to 6-of-14 (.429) by Wyoming. Adams State got back on track offensively to begin the quarter going on an 8-5 run to pull within ten, 25-15. The Cowgirls answered with a 14-4 run to close out the quarter to take a 39-19 lead headed into the locker room.
