Barrie Leads Day Two Charge at MW Championship


RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (April 18, 2017) – Senior Mackenzie Barrie carded a 70 (-2) to lead a day two charge from the Wyoming women’s golf team during the second round of play at the Mountain West Championship on Tuesday. Barrie surged ahead on the individual leaderboard 18 spots to move into a tie for 26th overall and push the Cowgirls into seventh with a final round of 18 slated for Wednesday. 

As a team, UW holds a 610 (+34) score after two rounds. The Cowgirls recorded a 300 (+12) on Tuesday and are just one shot behind Nevada in the team standings. Tuesday’s second round score of 300 (+12) ties UW’s all-time best MW Championship round. Wyoming also recorded the score during the second round of the 2011 tournament.   

“It was a great day for the team to bounce back and move up individually and as a team,” UW head coach Josey Stender said. “Mackenzie (Barrie) showed tremendous resilience and confidence today. Tomorrow we will continue to play the course to our strengths and with the patience and confidence it demands.”

Barrie’s magnificent round moved her total to 153 (+9) and consisted of a team-best three birdies, two of which came on the back nine. Barrie’s second round score is the best in her career eight rounds of play at the MW Championship. Additionally, her score was also not only a season best but it tied for her career low and is the best individual round for a Cowgirl at the tournament since Jonelle Martinez opened with a 70 (-2) in 2009. The Vernon, British Columbia, native also shot a 70 (-2) during the opening round of the Den Ron Moore Intercollegiate in October. 

Freshman Erin Sargent continued to hold her own on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Sargent posted a 77 (+5) on Tuesday to move her total score to 151 (+7). Sophomore Megan Knadler fired a solid 75 (+3) to bring her total to one shot behind Sargent. Knadler is tied for 23rd as Sargent owns a share of 21st of the 45 individuals.

Junior Gabrielle Gibson secured a 78 (+6) on day two. She is tied for 33rd following 36 holes of action with a 157 (+13). Despite moving down in the individual rankings, redshirt sophomore Sarah Hankins shot a 79 (+7) on Tuesday, which is one shot better than Monday’s opening round. Hankins will head into the final round of play tied for 39th.
