The University of Wyoming volleyball team held its annual Brown and Gold Scrimmage on Friday evening in the UniWyo Sports Complex. Despite dropping the first set, the Brown squad defeated the Gold team in five sets (25-19, 28-30, 25-14, 17-25, 15-8).
The Brown team was led by Emily Lewis who recorded 16 kills on the night. Redshirt freshman Bayly Poor had herself a solid outing by adding 14 kills and 8 digs. Senior Laura Beach was the third member of the Brown team to have double-digit kills, as she added ten. Senior Courtney Chacon led both teams with 41 assists. Chacon also added 12 digs, although junior Lily Austin led both teams with 28 digs during the match. Freshman Tara Traphagan had eight kills and seven digs, while sophomore Laurel Place recorded five kills and three blocks.
Sophomore Mattison DeGarmo paced the Gold team with 15 kills on the night. She also had ten digs. Senior Kayla Slofkiss added 13 kills for the Gold squad, in addition to her eight digs. Junior Dani Westfall had 35 assists for the Gold team, and also recorded nine digs. Freshman Jackie McBride had one kill on the evening, but added a match-high ten total blocks. Sophomore Reed Copeland and freshman Halie McArdle each contributed nine kills during the scrimmage. Additionally, Copeland had seven total blocks, while Marley Taylor added six for the Gold squad.
The Cowgirls begin non-conference action next weekend by competing in the Purdue Mortar Board Premier. Wyoming will open the 2016 campaign against No. 20 Purdue on Friday, Aug. 26, at 8:00 a.m. (MT) and No. 24 Kentucky at 3:00 p.m. They will then take on Washington State the following day at 11:00 a.m. It will mark the first time since 1996 that UW will begin its season with more than one ranked opponent in the opening weekend of play.
