Cowboys Closeout Homestand Hosting Troy

The Wyoming Cowboys wrap up their six-game homestand hosting Troy on Monday evening in the Arena-Auditorium. It is the second game of the Continental Tires Las Vegas Classic and the final campus site game of the tournament. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. start and is the first meeting between the schools since 1991.

The game will be broadcast live on radio over the 25 affiliate stations of the Cowboy Sports Network. Fans can watch live, follow live stats and listen to the contest on GoWyo.com. 

A Look at the Matchup

The Cowboys head into the Monday’s with a 8-2 record and are currently riding a five-game winning streak. The Pokes are defending well this season ranking No. 30 in the nation in field goal percentage defense at 38.6. UW also defends the three-point line as opponents are shooting only 30.1 percent, a number that ranks No. 39 in the nation. UW leads the MW and ranks No. 11 in the nation in defensive rebounds per game at 29.8. Wyoming leads the Mountain West and rank 37th nationally in three-point field goals per game at 9.4.

The Trojans are 6-5 on the season after falling to No. 24 USC on Saturday night by a score of 82-77. Troy has won three of their last four contests. The Trojans lead the Sun Belt and rank No. 61 in the nation in three pointers per game at 9.1. Troy is shooting 45 percent from the field and 36 percent from behind the arc. Opponents are shooting 40 percent from the field. Troy grabs 41.7 rebounds per game ranking second in the Sun Belt and ranking No. 14 nationally.

Each Team’s Leaders 

The Cowboys are led in scoring by sophomore guard Justin James. He is averaging 15.4 points per game on the season. James is shooting 48 percent from the field and adds 4.2 rebounds per game. Senior guard Jason McManamen is pouring in 15.3 points per game. He ranks third in the MW in three-pointers per game at 2.7, which ranks No. 92 nationally. Junior forward Alan Herndon is adding 11.0 points per game and 6.2 rebounds. He ranks second in the MW and No. 55 in the country in blocked shots per game at 1.9. He had a career-high four against Cornell on Saturday. Junior forward Hayden Dalton leads the team in rebounding at 7.0 per game. He also adds 11.2 points per night after scoring 27 points against Cornell on Saturday.

The Trojans are led in scoring by forward Jordon Varnado. He is adding 15.8 points per game and grabbing a team-high 6.6 rebounds. He also adds 1.6 blocks per game, which leads the Sun Belt. Guard Wesley Person, Jr., son of former NBA player Wesley Person is averaging 13.8 points per game. He has hit 27 triples this season to lead the team. His father hit over 1,000 three pointers in his career in the NBA. Guard Kevin Baker leads the team in assists with 36 on the season. 

About the Series

The Cowboys defeated Troy 102-92 on Dec. 14, 1991 in the teams only meeting. It was a historic game with Reggie Slater grabbing a school-record 27 rebounds in the game. Troy also holds the Arena-Auditorium record for field goals in a game (102) and three pointers attempted (59).
