For the second-straight year, the Wyoming women’s basketball team will open the regular season against the Chadron State Eagles. The game is set to begin on Friday at 5:30 p.m. MT in the Arena-Auditorium. Live stats, audio and video can be found on the GoWyo.com website.
Four Cowgirls recorded double-figures to lead the team to an eight-point win, 62-54, over the South Dakota Mines Hardrockers in Wyoming’s only exhibition game of the 2016-17 season.
Redshirt sophomore Bailee Cotton led all scorers on the night with 16 while bringing down five rebounds. Junior Liv Roberts had 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds while sophomore Marta Gomez added 12 points. Sophomore Rachelle Tucker also chipped in ten points and three boards. Wyoming shot 21-of-61 (.344) from the field and 16-of-20 (.800) from the free throw line. The Cowgirls out rebounded the Hardrockers 42-26 and had 12 assists on 21 baskets.
Friday night’s game will also be the first action of the season for Chadron State. CSC returns no starters and five letterwinners to a squad that went 8-18 overall and 8-14 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference a year ago. The top returner for Chadron State is senior guard Erin Graham who averaged nine points and 4.8 rebounds in 26 games.
The two teams have met ten times during the regular season with Wyoming holding a 10-0 lead in the series. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 15, 2015 with the Cowgirls winning 81-53 in Laramie. The Eagles are coached by Janet Raymer who is in her first season with the program.
