LARAMIE, Wyo. (Jan. 9, 2017) – The Wyoming women’s basketball team will open up a two-game road swing on Wednesday against the Utah State Aggies. The game is set for 7 p.m. MT at the Dee Glen Smith Center in Logan. Live stats, video and audio can be found on the GoWyo.com website.
Wyoming’s record is 11-3 overall and 3-0 in league office after a 70-48 victory over the Fresno State Bulldogs last Wednesday night in Laramie. It’s the first time since the 2007-08 season that the Cowgirls have opened up league play 3-0 and the 11-3 mark is the best start since the 2013-14 season. Junior Liv Roberts recorded her third double-double of the season with 24 points and tied a career-high with 12 rebounds. She was 9-15 from the field while adding four assists and two steals. Redshirt sophomore Bailee Cotton and freshman Taylor Rusk each contributed eight points followed by junior Natalie Baker and sophomore Marta Gomez with seven. Sophomore Clara Tapia dished out seven assists and had two steals. Wyoming shot 27-of-59 (.458) from the field, out rebounded the Bulldogs 38-30 and recorded 20 assists on 27 baskets.
Roberts, who was named the MW Player of the Week today, leads the team averaging 15.9 points and 6.8 rebounds plus 2.1 assists. She ranks fourth in field goal and three-point field goal percentage, fifth in scoring and 12th in rebounding while in league games she is first in field goal percentage, third in scoring and fifth in rebounding. Gomez follows with 9.5 points and 3.6 rebounds while Baker is adding 4.7 rebounds plus 7.9 points.
UW is shooting 328-762 (.430) from the field and 108-293 (.369) from beyond the arc. The Cowgirls are also outscoring opponents 67.6-53.6 and out rebounding teams 36.3-32.6. Wyoming ranks first in field goal percentage, three point field goal percentage, free throw percentage and assists.
Utah State enters the game 8-7 overall and 1-3 in league play. Last time out, the Aggies dropped a 55-53 overtime contest with UNLV. Sophomore Rachel Brewster leads the way with 11.9 points and 4.3 rebounds. Freshman Shannon Dufficy is averaging a team-high 8.9 points plus 9.2 points. As a squad, the Aggies are shooting 355-915 (.388) from the field, averaging 61.4 points and 39.4 rebounds per contest.
This will be the 25th meeting between the two schools with Wyoming holding a 16-8 lead in the series. The last time the two teams met was February 6, 2016 with the Aggies earning an 84-75 win. Utah State is coached by Jerry Finkbeiner who is in his fifth season with the program.
