Cowgirl Basketball Set to Begin Fall Drills on Monday

Head coach Joe Legerski and the University of Wyoming women’s basketball team have completed their preseason workouts and are set to begin regular-season practices for the 2016-17 season.  The Cowgirls’ first practice is slated for Monday afternoon and will continue on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday for the remainder of the week.

“The players have spent the last month with our Sports Performance staff and a limited amount of time on the court,” Legerski said.  “The start of practice marks the change from the weight room to the court.  We have several players with limited game experience and determining which players are ready to take on a major role will be the first task. October is an exciting time for players and staff alike.”

Wyoming returns four starters and 11 letterwinners from last season’s squad that went 13-16 overall and 6-1 in the Mountain West. In all, the squad consists of one senior, four juniors, seven sophomores and three freshmen.

Entering his 14th season at the helm, Legerski has an overall record of 245-156 while he holds a 120-88 mark in league play. Two individuals were selected for postseason honors. Outgoing senior Marquelle Dent was named to the All-Conference and All-Defensive teams for the second straight year while newcomer Marta Gomez was selected to the MW All-Freshmen team.

Several individuals will be looked upon to contribute during the 2016-17 campaign, including the four returning starters. Hailey Ligocki, the Cowgirls’ lone senior, started in 17 games and averaged 4.3 points a season ago. Juniors Natalie Baker and Liv Roberts were solid contributors with 8.8 and 10.1 points along with 5.9 and 5.8 rebounds, respectively. Gomez averaged 10.7 points and 4.7 rebounds during her first season with the program

Other returning letterwinners include juniors Marleah Campbell and Skyler Snodgrass, sophomores Bailee Cotton, Riikka Kujala, Coreen Labish, Tijana Raca and Rachelle Tucker. Wyoming also welcomes four newcomers to the team. Daley Handy sat out a season ago with an injury while Clara Tapia, Selale Kepenc and Taylor Rusk join the program in the fall.
Wyoming will open up the regular season with four out of the first five home games in the Arena-Auditorium. UW will tip things off against Chadron State on Friday, Nov. 11, followed by match-ups against the Denver Pioneers on Thursday, Nov. 17, Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, Nov. 20 and Adams State on Tuesday, Nov. 22.
