LARAMIE, Wyo. (Jan. 16, 2017) – The Wyoming women’s basketball team will play its first of a two-game homestand on Wednesday against the San José State Spartans. The game is set for 6:30 p.m. MT at the Arena-Auditorium in Laramie. Live stats, video and audio can be found on the GoWyo.com website.
The Cowgirls enter the contest with a 13-3 overall record and 5-0 in league play after a 72-59 victory over the Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday night in Reno. It’s the first time since the 2007-08 season that the Cowgirls have opened up league play 5-0 and the 13-3 mark equals the best start since the 2012-13 season. Junior Natalie Baker finished with her second double-double of the week with 14 points and ten rebounds, while junior Liv Roberts led the way with 17 points and 11 boards for her fourth double-double of the year. Senior Hailey Ligocki finished her night with 14 points followed by sophomore Marta Gomez with 13 points off the bench. The Cowgirls shot a season-high 56.6 percent (25-45) from the field and 60.0 percent (9-15) from beyond the arc. As a team, they out rebounded Nevada 33-22 and had 18 assists on 25 baskets.
Roberts leads the team averaging 15.8 points and 7.3 rebounds plus 2.3 assists. She ranks third in the MW in field goal percentage and scoring, fourth in three-point field goal percentage and 11th in rebounding. In league games she is second in scoring and field goal percentage and eighth in rebounding. Gomez follows with 10.2 points and 3.4 rebounds while Baker is adding 5.4 rebounds plus 8.8 points.
UW is shooting 381-865 (.440) from the field and 128-327 (.391) from beyond the arc. The Cowgirls are also outscoring opponents 67.1-53.6 and out rebounding teams 35.8-32.5. Wyoming ranks first in field goal percentage, three point field goal percentage, free throw percentage and assists.
San José State enters the contest with a 6-11 overall record and a 3-2 mark in league play. Last time out, the Spartans defeated Air Force 86-74. Senior Dezz Ramos leads the way averaging 22.4 points plus 2.4 rebounds. Senior Jasmine Smith is adding a team-high 8.9 rebounds along with 12.2 points. As a squad, the Spartans are shooting 441-1152 (.383) from the field, averaging 71.9 points and 36.9 rebounds per contest.
This will be the ninth meeting between the two schools with Wyoming holding a 5-3 lead in the series. The last time the two teams met was March 1, 2016 with the Spartans earning a 65-51 victory. San José State is coached by Jamie Craighead who is in her fourth season with the program.
