Four individuals continued competition at the Air Force Invitational, while two doubles teams began play at the Riviera/ITA All-American Tennis Championships on Saturday.
At the Air Force Invitational, two singles players and a doubles team earned wins. Freshman Milka Genkova rallied back after going down in the first set to defeat Riley Reeves of Colorado State, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. She will play TJ Fumagalli of Air Force tomorrow in the finals. In the back draw, freshman Ana Tkachenko won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, over Celine Voss of Colorado State. She will face Yadira Rubio of Texas State in the consolation final. The team of Miranda Talbert and Genkova rebounded from a loss earlier in the day to defeat Summer Brills and Joely Lomas of Drake, 6-4.
“The ladies really took strides forward today, playing UW style of tennis,” head coach Dean Clower said. “I am proud of the way we competed and are improving. They need to recover quickly and be ready to go again tomorrow.”
All four members of the Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team competed in the first day of the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
In the pre-qualifying doubles draw, the team of Elisa Koonik and Tessa Van Der Ploeg dropped the opening match, 8-4, against Bolsova and Blanco of Oklahoma State, while Dorottya Jonas and Magdalena Stencel lost to Navarro and Leduc of Clemson, 8-1.
Stencel also competed in the pre-qualifying singles bracket. She would open up with a straight set loss, 6-3, 6-0 against Marie Locker of San Jose State followed by Tess Bernard-Feigenbaun of Kansas.
“For the first tournament of the season, we came out ready and gave ourselves chances,” associate head coach Maciej Bogusz said. “We just need to execute better in the future. We know what we need to work on and are looking forward to another day of competition tomorrow.”
The Cowgirls will wrap up play at the Air Force Invitational, while the doubles teams will compete in the back draw at the Riviera/ITA All-American Tennis Championships.
