The Wyoming tennis team had an up and down second day at the 2016 ITA Mountain Regional Championships on Thursday in Albuquerque.
“We squandered away too many opportunities and left shots on the court which hurt us,” head coach Dean Clower said. “We are playing much better in doubles and hope to continue that tomorrow.”
Both doubles teams took the court today. The duo of Dorottya Jonas and Magdalena Stencel defeated Chiara Tomasetti and Hailey Rochin of Northern Arizona, 8-6. They will play in the round of 16 tomorrow. Sophomores Elisa Koonik and Tessa Van Der Ploeg fell short 8-5 against Aiwen Zhu and Carol Zi Yang of UNLV.
Stencel began singles play with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Ruth Copas of New Mexico but dropped her match, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, to Tomasetti in the round of 32. Jonas also won her opening match of the day, 6-4, 7-5, over Diana Wong of New Mexico. She lost to Maureen Slattery of Denver, 6-3, 6-1. Koonik came up short in her match, 6-1, 6-4, against Claudia Herrero of Nevada while van Der Ploeg lost in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, to Paola Artiga of UNLV. All four will continue play in the back draw.
Play will continue tomorrow with the round of 32 in singles and the round of 16 in doubles play.
