Cowgirl Tennis Set to Host Colorado State in Home Finale

LARAMIE, Wyo. (April 20, 2017) – The Wyoming tennis team will host its final home match of the season on Saturday against the Colorado State Rams. The match will begin at 1 p.m. MT at the UW Indoor Tennis Complex. It will be the final home match for seniors Dorottya Jonas and Miranda Talbert.  

“It’s always a big match against CSU being a conference rival. They will be up to play to take on us and vice versa,” head coach Dean Clower said. “I hope we have a great turnout for Dorottya and Miranda’s senior day. Dorottya has been a staple in this program over the past four years, playing in the top of the line-up on two of our best teams in program history. She will be greatly missed and we are thankful for her time here. Miranda has been a solid contributor over the past two years. She has been a big part of our team leadership and we wish her the best going forward.”

The Cowgirls enter the weekend with a 16-3 overall record and a 4-0 mark in league play. They are a perfect 9-0 at home this season and currently on a seven-match winning streak. With 16 victories on the season, it’s the most wins in a single-season in program history.

Freshman Ana Tkachenko sports an impressive 21-5 overall mark, 16-2 in dual play while holding a 4-0 mark in MW action. Three other Cowgirls have posted 18 wins overall led by sophomore Tessa Van Der Ploeg and freshman Milka Genkova who are 18-8 overall. Jonas and sophomore Elisa Koonik are 18-11 and 17-8 respectively. Junior Magdalena Stencel is 12-10 overall and 9-5 during the spring. At the number one spot, Koonik and van Der Ploeg are 11-3 this spring and a perfect 4-0 in doubles action. Jonas and Tkachenko are 13-6 overall and 12-4 in dual play.

Colorado State enters the week 8-12 overall, 0-5 in the league and will play Northern Colorado on Thursday afternoon. They are led by freshman Sandra Keta with a 12-17 mark followed by senior Madison Porter with an 11-15 record. This will be the 26th meeting between the two schools. CSU leads the series 14-11. The last time the two squads met was April 28, 2016 with the Cowgirls coming out on top with a 4-0 in the opening round of the MW tournament. Colorado State is coached by Jarod Camerota who is in his first year with the program.
