SAN JOSE, Calif. (Oct. 22, 2016) – A balanced attack of five players scoring on four or more kills guided the University of Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team to victory over San Jose State. UW (13-9, 6-3 MW) claimed its 11th straight-set (25-15, 25-16, 25-20) sweep of the season on Saturday afternoon.

“I thought this team played consistent today,” UW head coach Chad Callihan said. “We were locked in mentally and played clean throughout the match. We had lapses this past week where we struggled to put together two solid sets in a row. I didn’t think that was the case today, as we were able to do that very well.”

Sophomore Emily Lewis tied her career-high with 13 kills, as senior Kayla Slofkiss joined Lewis in double-digits with ten against the Spartans (10-12, 3-7 MW). Slofkiss added seven digs and three total blocks on Saturday. Senior Courtney Chacon became the sixth Cowgirl in program history to record at least 3,000 assists in their career, as she once again led Wyoming with 29 assists, in addition to her five digs and three blocks.

Sophomore Reed Copeland led both teams with eight blocks during the match. She chipped in six kills for the Brown and Gold, while senior Laura Beach and freshman TTara Traphagan added four kills each. Traphagan posted a career-high seven blocks for UW, as Beach recorded six. Freshman Madi Fields had 11 digs against the Spartans for her eighth match this season in double-digits.

The Cowgirls fell behind by three, 4-1, in the opening set before an attacking error and a couple of kills from Slofkiss allowed UW to even the score at four. Tied at ten, Wyoming went on a 5-2 run thanks in part to two kills each from Traphagan and Copeland. SJSU then called timeout with UW leading, 15-12. Slofkiss claimed two kills right after the timeout to further Wyoming’s lead, 17-12. Ultimately, UW went on a 10-3 run to close out the first set, 25-15. Wyoming hit .400 in the first, compared to San Jose State’s .167. Chcaon had her first 11 assists, while Slofkiss led with five kills in the opening set.

The second set began with Wyoming claiming a 4-0 advantage. Chacon recorded her 3,000 career assist in the second stanza and helped UW jump out to 14-8 lead, before the Spartans took their first timeout. Two straight brought SJSU within eight, as UW led 22-14. After an attacking error from the Spartans, Lewis smashed home the final two points for UW. Wyoming won the set by a score of 25-16 to take a 2-0 set lead into intermission. Lewis had a set-high six kills in the second. Chacon dished out 11 assists, as Beach recorded three blocks.

The Spartans tied its largest lead of the entire match by taking a lead of 11-8 to begin the third set. The Cowgirls matched the score at 11 behind two kills from Lewis and an attacking error from SJSU. A block from Copeland and Slofkiss gave UW its first lead in the set, 14-13. From that point, the Cowgirls never looked back and took the set, 25-20. Copeland had five blocks in the final set, while Traphagan added four. Lewis added four kills during the final frame, and helped seal what was the fourth road victory of the year for the Cowgirls.

Wyoming will be at home in the UniWyo Sports Complex for its next four matches. They will welcome Border War rival Colorado State on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. MT, before a matchup with Utah State on Thursday.
