Two doubles teams wrapped up play at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships, on Sunday, in Pacific Palisades, Calif., while the remainder of the team finished the weekend at the Air Force Invitational in Colorado Springs.
In the pre-qualifying doubles back draw, the duo of Dorottya Jonas and Magdalena Stencel pulled out a thrilling 8-7 win over Donika Bashota and Olaya Garrido-Rivas of TCU, while Elisa Koonik and Tessa Van Der Ploeg recorded an 8-3 victory against Daniela Morales and Colombia DiFilippo of San Diego.
“I’m very pleased with the way the players bounced back today and beat some solid opponents,” associate head coach Maciej Bogusz said. “We are looking forward to our next opportunities to keep getting better.”
At the Air Force Invitational, two singles players and a pair of doubles teams earned wins. Freshman Ana Tkachenko defeated Yadira Rubio, 6-3, 6-1, in the fourth draw singles consolation finals. Freshman Imogen Clews won her match over Alyssa Grijalva of Colorado State in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Senior Miranda Talbert and Tkachenko defeated Walker and Williams, 6-4, while following that up with a 6-2 win over Tugarinova and Jones of Utah State. The team of Milka Genkova and Clews were winners over Brills and Williams of Drake, 6-3, but fell, 6-4 against Chloe and Lily Forlini of Air Force.
“I’m happy with the improvements the team made over the past three days,” head coach Dean Clower. “Today’s tennis was by far the best we have played this fall. If we continue our progress we will be where we need to be sooner than later.”
The Cowgirls will return to action on Oct. 12 at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
