LARAMIE, Wyo. -
University of Wyoming Athletics Director Gary Barta announced Saturday that he would remain at UW. Barta had been named as a candidate for the vacant Arizona State University AD position earlier this week.
STATEMENT FROM UW ATHLETICS DIRECTOR Gary Barta
The past few days have been difficult for me, for my family, and certainly for fans of University of Wyoming athletics. We love Wyoming, and were not looking to leave. During the past few months, four universities contacted me about becoming their athletics director. I turned three down flat. But this was a special opportunity that I felt I owed to my family to explore. That exploration is over.
I came to Laramie to help the University of Wyoming become a major player in intercollegiate athletics and that remains my goal. There are so many positive, exciting things for University of Wyoming fans to look forward to in this university's future, including the furthering of the Strategic Plan for Intercollegiate Athletics. I intend to be part of that future.
STATEMENT FROM UW PRESIDENT Philip L. Dubois
I am delighted that Gary will continue to be part of the University of Wyoming family. Having worked closely with him, I know that Gary and his family love the state and people of Wyoming. Every young professional needs to look at promising opportunities that come along, and we shouldn't begrudge Gary the opportunity he explored. But that's done, and I know he will give the University of Wyoming his full commitment for a long time to come.
