Wyoming Announces Spirit Team for 2016-17

May 23, 2016

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Over 60 students participated in the University of Wyoming Spirit Team tryouts, which took place over the weekend of March 14-15 at the University of Wyoming Half-Acre Gym.

Tryouts consisted of two days of evaluations by two different judging panels made up of UW Athletic Department administrators, Cowboy Joe Club staff, UW Spirit Alumni, UW Spirit Coaching Staff and key members of the community. Each tryout participant was evaluated in various areas to include a formal interview panel, academic records, personal references, interpersonal/communication skills, tumbling, stunting, crowd leading, performance skills, and more. The comprehensive approach to the selection process was implemented this year to support selecting the top tier of students who would excel at representing UW well in the classroom, the community and on the sidelines at games. Returning members are also required to participate in tryouts in order to be considered for placement on the new team each year.

At the end of weekend, a Spirit Team (cheer and mascots) of 35 individuals was selected to cheer on our Cowboys and represent UW for the 2016-2017 year. UW Cheerleaders and mascots cheer at all home football, men's and women's basketball, and volleyball games. As a team, they completed over 2,000 hours of community service throughout the 2015-2016 school year and made over 115 community appearances.

Here is what some of the 2016-17 UW Spirit Team said about their experience this year at tryouts:

Katie K, (incoming freshman from Colorado) said, "Trying out for the University of Wyoming Spirit Team was an experience I will always remember. The amount of competitiveness that all of the athletes show exceeded my expectations and showed me how outstanding the spirit team is. The connections I've made with the other athletes on my new team are out of this world and I will cherish them forever."

Bailey T., (second year returner from Wyoming) said, "The university of Wyoming spirit team had helped me grow as an individual and had an amazing impact on my first year here at UW. These tryouts were the most nerve wrecking yet. A drastic change in size to the program and an overwhelming amount of talent put a lot of pressure on the candidates for the 2016-2017 season. I am so thankful to have the opportunity to learn and represent our school again and I am excited to get to know these talented individuals and grow together as a team."

Jarrett H., (second year returner from Colorado) said, "It was a truly humbling experience to be a part of such an amazing group of athletes that tried out this year. I am so grateful to have been selected to be on the team and represent my university once again."

Chelby L., (a third year returning co-captain from Wyoming) said, "It was a tough two days of tryouts! This year the size of our team was drastically decreased, which made the process even more competitive. With all of the different components that go along with cheer, there was a lot of skill and potential showcased. Not only were the newcomers impressive, but the returners also brought it to another level. The team that was finally selected is made up of an amazing group of individuals! I'm so honored to be a part of the 2016-2017 UW Spirit Team and exited to show everyone what we will bring to the UW game day experience."

Taylor R. (an incoming freshmen from Colorado) said, "I had been anticipating my UW cheer tryout for years, knowing I always wanted to be apart of the Wyoming spirit program. I never would have imagined that coming out that I would be a UW cheerleader and that I would have met so many amazing athletes. It was incredibly humbling to be surrounded by cheerleaders that had my same goal. I cannot wait to spend my first year at UW in a program that embodies a perfect collegiate experience."
