Barta Takes Iowa Athletics Director Position

June 23, 2006

The University of Iowa announced today the hiring of Gary Barta as their Athletics Director. Barta had been the AD at the University of Wyoming since September, 2003.

"For the past three years, Gary Barta has been a valuable member of the University of Wyoming administration," said UW president Tom Buchanan. "I have come to rely on him as a thoughtful advocate for Cowboy and Cowgirl sports who understands and appreciates the appropriate role of intercollegiate athletics at a university with an abiding commitment to academic excellence.

"Anyone who has seen the plans for our new outdoor track and our new indoor practice facility knows that Gary has worked hard to improve the climate for our student-athletes and our fans. Anyone who has spent any time with Gary knows that he has cared deeply about the on-field and on-court successes of our players and their coaches. It is equally true that he has cared as much - if not more - about the academic successes of our student-athletes and the integrity of our intercollegiate athletics program.

"I know that the University of Iowa will appreciate Gary as much as we have. I wish him, Connie, and their children only the best.

"Within the next few days I will appoint an interim athletics director following meetings with senior administrators and head coaches. In the meantime, the department will operate under the able leadership of Deputy Athletics Director Barbara Burke."
