LARAMIE, Wyo. -
A record amount of $225,000 was raised at the 20th Annual Cowboy Joe Club Auction, which was held Friday, Oct. 20 at the Taco John's Events Center in Cheyenne.
The auction also set another record mark with over 650 Cowboy and Cowgirl supporters in attendance. This year's total of $225,000 was a jump of $45,000 over last year's then-record amount of $180,000. The auction - celebrating a "retro" theme - featured 350 silent auction and 45 live auction items. Many of those in attendance came dressed in their best gear from the decades of the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's.
The auctioneer for the live auction was Lex Madden of Torrington. "The Voice of the Cowboys" Dave Walsh served as the master of ceremonies for the evening. Dan Brain (Danno) provided entertainment during the silent auction. Also attending the auction were Pistol Pete, the UW cheerleaders and Wildfire dance team along with 36 members of the UW marching band - Western Thunder.
All proceeds from the annual auction support scholarships for the nearly 400 student-athletes at UW. Harry Kembel of Cheyenne served as chair of the auction committee for the fifth year. During Kembel's time as auction chair revenue from the event has tripled.
Donations to the auction came from nearly 350 businesses and individuals from Wyoming and across the nation. Some of the featured items included a Cowboy golf cart, a customized UW ATV, vacation and golf packages, a piece of the original Arena-Auditorium floor, unique Wyoming athletics experiences and the Bud Bus package.
