Dec. 10, 2010
LARAMIE, Wyo. - The University of Wyoming Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in connection with the Laramie Detachment of the Marine Corps League hosted their annual Christmas Kid's Carnival on Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010, at the UniWyo Sports Complex on the UW campus.
Families from the Head Start Program in Albany County came out to enjoy carnival games, Christmas treats and presents from Santa Claus.
UW Athletic teams volunteered to host different carnival stations and to spend time with children from over 40 families. The highlight of the event was a visit from Santa Claus, where he gave each child a present.
Student-athletes and the Marine Corps League collected toys and donations for the Toys for Tots drive in November. One of the collection points for toys was War Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 20 prior to Wyoming's football game versus Colorado State. A portion of those proceeds were used to buy presents for all of the children at the Christmas Kid's Carnival.
Toys For Tots is a program that has been coordinated for years by the United States Marine Corps Reserve. All toys donated this year in Albany County will remain in Albany County.
The Marines also work with the Community Holidays Program in Albany County to register families to receive toys. The Community Holidays Program will distribute the toys to families in mid-December.
