Wyoming Athletics Department Participates in Holiday Community Service Projects

Dec. 19, 2008

The student-athletes and staff of the University of Wyoming Athletics Department have been busy participating in a number of Holiday events this year.

The Holiday season began for Wyoming Athletics when it teamed with the Brown and Gold Outlet to collect canned goods for the "Community Holidays" program. Over 1,000 pounds of canned goods were donated by fans who attended Cowboy and Cowgirl Basketball games throughout the month of November.

At the final home football game of the 2008 season approximately $4,750 in cash donations were collected for "Toys for Tots", along with 310 toys for the program.

Student-athletes then joined together with "Toys for Tots" representatives on Sunday, Dec. 7 to hold a Christmas Carnival in the UniWyo Sports Complex on the UW campus for an afternoon of fun and games. During that carnival, the toys were distributed to community children by Santa Claus.

A number of offices within UW Athletics also continued the tradition of participating in the "Community Holidays" program that is coordinated by Karen Royce of Laramie, whereby groups or individuals can adopt a family for the Holidays and provide those families with gifts. This year, UW Athletics employees were involved in adopting 11 families, including 45 individuals. The gifts purchased for those families were delivered on Thursday, Dec. 11 and Friday, Dec. 12 in time for the families to enjoy them for Christmas.

In conjunction with the adoption of families through the "Community Holidays" program, the Cowgirl Volleyball team held a three-day volleyball camp on Dec. 3-5, with part of the proceeds from that camp also being donated to the "Community Holidays" program.
