Wyoming Cheer and Dance Tryouts to be Held

The University of Wyoming Athletics Department will hold tryouts the weekends of April 16-17 and April 22-24 for members of their cheer and dance squads.

There are three different squads at UW, Co-ed Cheer, All-Girl Cheer, and Wildfire Dance Team. The Co-ed Cheer squad cheers for football (home and away) and men's basketball. The All-Girl squad cheers for home football games, volleyball, and women's basketball. The dance team cheers and performs at football and men's basketball games.

Six couples will be selected for the co-ed squad, 12 women on the all-girl squad, and 12 women plus one alternate on the dance team. There are scholarships offered for each squad if chosen at try-outs. The All-Girl Cheer squad and the dance team members receive $250 per semester, $500 per year. The Co-ed Cheer squad members as well as the mascot receive $500 per semester, $1,000 per year. The goal of the University of Wyoming is to make all squads competitive at the National level.

The requirements for tryouts:

Co-ed Females: Standing back handspring, round-off back handspring, toe touch, optional jump, toss hands liberty, walk-to-the-top (walk-in extension), optional stunt, and a cheer and dance that will be taught at the clinics. A 120 lb. weight limit is enforced. Please wear cheer shorts and sports bras.

Males: Standing back tuck, tumbling pass, toss hands liberty, walk-to-the-top (walk-in extension), optional stunt, and a cheer with stunts that will be taught at the clinics. Please wear shorts and t-shirts.

All-Girl Squad: Standing back handspring & tumbling pass a plus! Toe touch, optional jump, stunts with girls (elevators, liberty's, combinations, etc.) at the position you are most comfortable at (base or flyer), and a cheer and dance that will be taught at the clinics. Please wear cheer shorts and sports bras.

Wildfire: Toe touch, double pirouette, axel, side leap, switch leap, and a dance taught at the clinic. Please wear black dance pants and sports bras.

Those trying out for cheerleading can find a partner to try out with at tryouts. Males and co-ed females will partner up and female stunt groups will be determined. Candidates are not allowed to bring someone to tryouts for stunting purposes.

The clinic for Wildfire dance team is Friday, April 16 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium. Tryouts will begin 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning April 17 in the Arena Auditorium. The clinics for Cheerleading squads are Thursday, April 22 and Friday, April 23 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium. Tryouts will begin Saturday morning April 24 at 8:30 a.m. in the Arena Auditorium. The cost of tryouts is $10 to cover the cost of judges.

Each participant will need to bring a copy of the application and insurance waiver with them to the clinics.
