LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Three University of Wyoming wrestlers have been named Honorable Mention Academic All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA).

Brandon Dansie, Jeremy Sell and Matt Winninger were all named to the Honorable Mention team. The teams are selected by the NWCA. There are ten wrestlers on the First Team, 11 on the Second Team and 34 Honorable Mention selections.

The awards were presented to individuals who displayed the ability to perform in the classroom as well as on the mat.

Dansie was a part-time starter for Wyoming at both 174 and 184 pounds. During the 1998-99 season, he compiled an overall record of 17-10. Dansie placed third at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships in the 174-pound weight class. Dansie, a junior from Salt Lake City, Utah, has a 3.758 cumulative grade-point-average in business. He was a Second Team Academic All-American selection in 1998, and has also been selected as a WAC Scholar-Athlete.

Sell was also in and out of the lineup during the year. Wrestling in the 174-pound weight class, Sell had an overall record of 17-15. A junior from Colstrip, Mont., Sell carries a 3.17 cumulative g.p.a. in engineering. Sell has been a major weapon for Wyoming the past three years, and placed second at the WAC Championships in 1998. Sell was an Honorable Mention selection last year as well, along with being selected as a WAC Scholar-Athlete.

Winninger was the WAC Champion at 157-pounds. He compiled an overall record of 16-16, but went 2-0 at the WAC Championships and was 1-2 at the NCAA Championships. Winninger, a senior from Cody, Wyo., was the starter the entire year for the Cowboys. With a major in marketing, Winninger has a cumulative g.p.a. of 3.456. Earlier this spring, Winninger was named to the National Strength and Conditioning Association All-American team.

"We are extremely proud of these young men," said Steven Suder, University of Wyoming head wrestling coach. "These accomplishments are a reflection of the hard work they have put forth in their sport and in academics. They are all excellent representatives of the University of Wyoming.

"These honors are also a tribute to our academic counseling department, who do an unbelievable job."

Last year Dansie and Corey Hamrick, who redshirted this past year, were on the Second Team while Sell and former Cowboy Jeff Tufano were Honorable Mention.
