UW Student-Athletes Excel Academically in the 1998 Spring Semster

LARAMIE, Wyo. - University of Wyoming Athletics Director Lee Moon is pleased toannounce the 1998 spring academic performance of all UWstudent-athletes. The results were impressive as all team semestergrade point averages were at least 2.5 and 47% of Wyoming'sstudent-athletes had a 3.0 or better GPA.

Nine of the thirteen varsity sports improved their spring teamgrade point averages over last year at this time, and there was also asubstantial increase in 3.0's or better over last spring (47% vs. 38%).The women's swimming and diving team sported the highest team GPA inSpring '98 amoung UW teams with a 3.42, followed by men's golf with 3.15and women's track and field with 3.13.

"We are very proud of what our student-athletes accomplish inthe classroom," Moon said. "These efforts are the result of atremendous amount of work by Pete Toye and his academic support staff aswell as the dedication and cooperation of our coaching staff."

UW's student-athletes historically have been very strongacademically, and the 1997-98 school year was no exception with UW teamsearning a number of national honors. The football team produced moreFirst Team Academic All-Americans than any other school in the nation,placing three on the team in 1997, while the wrestling team was rankedtwelfth in the nation based on team GPA and the women's swimming anddiving team ranked 27th based on team GPA.
