LARAMIE, Wyo. – The sixth annual Memory of the 8 Run & Walk, held in honor of the eight University of Wyoming cross country athletes who tragically passed away in an automobile accident in September 2001, will take place in Gillette, Wyo., on Friday, Sept. 16. The event will be held on the 15-year anniversary of the tragedy. Former UW runner Morgan McLeland, one of the eight who died, was from Gillette.
Participants have the option to take part in an 8-mile run or a 5-kilometer walk or run, each beginning at M&K Oil in Gillette. Registration will take place from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and is free to the public. The 5K run and walk starts at 5:00 p.m. MT, while the 8-mile run is scheduled to begin 30 minutes later. A barbeque and social will be held for participants after the conclusion of the races.
Six of the eight victims of the 2001 accident were Wyoming natives. The eight Cowboys who passed away on Sept. 16, 2001 were Cody Brown of Hudson, Colo.; Kyle Johnson of Riverton, Wyo.; Joshua Jones of Laramie, Wyo.; Justin Lambert-Belanger of Timmons, Ontario, Canada; Kevin Salverson of Cheyenne, Wyo.; Shane Shatto of Douglas, Wyo. and McLeland.
