FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The University of Wyoming men’s golf team currently sits in 11th place at the Ram Masters Invitational after Monday’s 36 holes of competition at the Fort Collins Country Club. Junior Drew McCullough led the Cowboys on the first day of the tourney hosted by Colorado State, chalking back-to-back rounds of 70 (E) to settle into a tie for 13th place on the individual leaderboard with the 18-hole final round remaining.
McCullough picked up 10 birdies on Monday, tied for the second-best total in the field of 100 golfers. Par-four holes were the most friendly to the Wyoming junior during the day, as he tied for the best average in the field, 3.95, on the Fort Collins Country Club’s 10 par-four holes.
Fellow junior Arron Lickteig carded a score of 145 (+5) on Monday, posting a 73 (+3) in the morning round and following it with a 72 (+2) in the afternoon. He is currently tied for 27th place after one day of competition. Senior Ryan Wallen carded two rounds of 74 (+4) to finish the day tied for 49th with a score of 148 (+8).
Junior Quintin Pope posted a score of 75 (+5) in the morning round and 77 (+7) in the afternoon to finish the day tied for 71st at 152 strokes. Pope and Wallen each finished in the top seven in total pars on Monday, with Pope carding 26 pars while Wallen had 25. Junior Glenn Workman is tied for 82nd heading into the final round after scores of 76 (+6) and 78 (+8) on Monday.
Speaking about the Cowboys’ performance on Monday, Wyoming head coach Joe Jensen noted the difficulty of the Fort Collins Country Club. “It’s a very difficult golf course,” he said. “You can get in a rhythm and just make a little mistake and then have a big number.”
While Monday’s scores didn’t necessarily match the Cowboys’ expectations, Jensen remains confident in the ability of his players to rebound in Tuesday’s final round. “I’m not down at all about it,” he said following Monday’s rounds. “It’s the beginning of a long stretch. It’s one day. We’ll come out and play well tomorrow.”
As a team, Wyoming totaled 292 strokes (+12) in the morning round and 293 (+13) in the afternoon to finish the day at 585 (+25). Wichita State and Air Force are tied for the tournament lead at 563 (+3), while Air Force’s Sunwoo Choi leads the individual leaderboard with a first-day 135 (-5).
