July 10, 2014

Former Cowgirl tennis player Veronica Popovici was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete for her work in the classroom as the awards were announced Thursday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Popovici, a native of Piatra Neamt, Romania, completed her senior year in May with the Cowgirl tennis team. She was recently named to the 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Women's At-Large Third Team as selected by CoSIDA, while being chosen earlier in the month to the First Team Academic All-District VII Team. She finished the year with a 4.0 grade-point average in family and consumer sciences. She is a four-time Academic All-MW and MW Scholar-Athlete honoree.

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade-point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).

Popovici earned her fourth consecutive First Team All-Mountain award in singles after going 20-11 overall during the 2013-14 campaign. She was also selected All-Mountain West for the third-straight year with doubles partner Dorottya Jonas.
