Wyoming Swimmers Compete at University of California - Irvine Invitational

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

After training in Irvine, Calif. for nine days, the University of Wyoming swimmers competed in an invitational at the University of California - Irvine over the weekend. The Cowboys finished the weekend in first place in all of the competitions, including the individual meet (517 points), distance meet (184 points) and relay competition (139 points).

The Cowgirls concluded in sixth place out of thirteen teams in the individual meet (108 points) and fifth place out of eight teams in the relay competition (34 points). The other teams participating in the invitational were host school UCI, Calif. Baptist University, University of Nevada - Reno, University of Illinois, Colorado State University, San Diego State University, as well as several others.

In the 50-freestyle competition, junior Jon George and senior Guy Fulfer finished first and second place, respectively. Fulfer also finished in second place in both the 100 and 200-freestyle events and third in the 200-individual medley. Junior Jake Weidert finished in first place for the 200-butterfly (1:53.77) and third place in the 200-freestyle with a 1:46.48 time.

Junior Damian Storz continued his success of the season while competing in the invitational as he finished in first place in both the 1650-freestyle event (16:18.33) and 200-individual medley event (1:57.15), second in the 100-butterfly (51.88).

Cowboy newcomer Jerram Chudleigh started out his career with Wyoming with tremendous success as he concluded the weekend with first place finishes in the 200-backstroke (1:55.75) and 100-butterfly (51.88), second in the 200-butterfly (1:54.12) and third in the 400-individual medley (4:12.26).

"I am pleased with how good Jerram looks after having a couple of weeks here with us," said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "We look forward to having a lot of contributions from him."

Freshman Scott Usher finished the invitational in first place in the 100-breaststroke (58.73) and second in the 200-breaststroke (2:10.72).

"I am very happy with the amount of men winners we had," said Johnson. "They really dominated the meet."

During the relay competition, the Wyoming "A" team finished in first place in the 200-freestyle (1:26.73), 400-freestyle (3:12.53), 800-freestyle (7:06.90), 400-medley (3:32.82), 3 x 100 butterfly (2:38.15) and the 800-freestyle (7:20.36).

The Cowgirls had to swim without four girls as they came down with the flu and were unable to participate. The team finished the weekend with junior Mabry Fiddler finishing with fourth place in the 200-breaststroke (2:26.73) and seventh place in the 100-breaststroke (1:07.90). Sophomore Katie Haywood finished in ninth in the 50-freestyle (24.94), tenth in the 100-freestyle (54.08) and thirteenth in the 100-butterfly (1:00.96).

Also finishing well for the Cowgirls at the invitational were sophomores Janelyn Lilly and Ashley Mallett and junior Anne Haywood who all came away with sixth place finishes. Lilly finished with a 2:09.65 time in the 200-backstroke event, Mallett finished with a 2:11.78 time in the 200-butterfly and Haywood ended with a 1:00.13 time for the 100-butterfly.

Junior Lindsey Springer came away with a thirteenth place finish in the 50-freestyle (25.24) and eighteenth in the 100-freestyle (54.71).

"I was very pleased with the girls events," said Johnson. "Every one of the girls swam pretty well."

The Wyoming "A" relay team concluded the competition with a third place finish in both the 200-freestyle (1:39.56) and the 400-freestyle (3:37.67), fourth in the 3 x 100 butterfly event (3:03.44), and fifth in both the 800-freestyle (8:02.38) and 400-medley relay (4:04.62).

The Cowboys and Cowgirls finish their training in Irvine, Calif. on Jan. 9 and then return to Laramie for a women's home dual against the Air Force Academy on Jan. 19 at 1:00 PM in Corbett Pool.
