Laramie, Wyo. -- The University of Wyoming men'sand women's swimming and diving teams each lost their first dual ofthe season to Arizona State, Friday afternoon at the Mona PlummerAquatic Center in Tempe, Ariz. ASU knocked off the Cowboys by a scoreof 89-152 and the women fell to the Sun Devils 66-175.
The Cowboys (3-1 overall), won five of 13 events on the day includingthe 400 medley relay. In that relay, the team of freshman CarlMarais, senior Scott Usher, junior Gene Birks and senior GrantKritzinger swam to a first place time of 3:20.50. Individually,Marais led the way for the Cowboys as he won both the 200 freestyleand the 200 backstroke. He swam a time of 1:39.77 in the freestyleand a 1:50.58 in the backstroke. Usher cruised to a first placefinish in the 200 breaststroke by swimming to a time of 2:00.76.Birks also picked up a first place finish as he swam the top time of46.43 in the 100 freestyle.
The Cowgirls (3-1 overall), won just two events on the day, the 1 and3-meter diving boards. In 1-meter action, sophomore Saara Haapanendove to a first place score of 265.58 and freshman Brittany Wainwrightfinished second with a score of 240.38. Wainwright then won the3-meter board with a score of 272.18.
The Wyoming swimming and diving team will return to Laramie to openthe final Mountain West Conference portion of their schedule in twoweeks. Both teams will dual with UNLV on Sat., Jan. 22. The Cowgirlstake their 2-0 MWC mark into the dual while the Cowboys will see theirfirst conference action of the season. The dual is set to begin at 12p.m. at Corbett Pool.
