Swimming and Diving Teams Split With Air Force

Wyoming Swimming and Diving traveled to Colorado Springs this past weekend to compete for the second time this season against the Air Force Falcons. The two teams split wins for the second time this season with the Cowgirls winning over the Air Force women and the Air Force men defeating the Wyoming men.

The Cowgirls started the meet off strong by the Wyoming B team winning the 400 Relay Medley with a time of 4:03.32 and the Wyoming A team placing third with a time of 4:14.39. Leading the women in individual events was Jessica Schiffl winning the 200 Free (1:58.44) and the 500 Free (5:16.96).

Freshman Stephanie Fuller won her first event of the season in the 1000 Free with a time of 10:57.85. Jen Rice placed third in the 1000 Free with a time of 11:25.72. Rice also placed third in the 200 Back (2:14.09), Ashley West was fourth with a time of 2:20.13. Freshman Natalie Koop placed seond in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:14.78.

Other event winners for the Cowgirls were Jennifer Schurz in the 200 IM (2:14.42), and Theresa Nakao in the 200 Breast (2:32.15). The women placed first, second and third in the 200 Breast with Elizabeth Nowak finishing second (2:32.32) and Jen Weidert placing third (2:34.49). Emily Hollon, Bethany Larsen and Carrie Behrens all had strong performances for the Cowgirls finishing in the top five in the 100 Free. Hollon also placed second in the 200 Free (1:58.69) while Larsen and Behrens finished second and third in the 50 Free.

The Cowboys swam strong in their events, despite losing to Air Force and feeling the effects of being on the road 15 of 21 days. The relay teams for Wyoming posted the three fastest times to win the 400 Relay Medley, sweeping the top three places in the event.

Senior Mickey Aberle led the men by placing second in the 200 IM (1:59.02), and the 100 Free (47.61). Colin Wallace and Jake Rehard were right behind Aberle in the 100 Free placing third and fourth respectively. Senior Mike Hembree won the 500 Free posting a time of 4:54.48.

Other top finishers for the men consisted of senior Kirk Hollingsworth placing second in the 200 Back (2:01.27) and Phil Rehard and Josh Cunningham coming in third and fourth. Robert Boysenplaced second in the 200 Fly (2:00.76) with John Stone and Nathan Jensen finishing third and fourth behind Boysen.

The Wyoming diving team has continued to prove it's strength as they compete solidly in conference meets. Dominy Thompson lead the women in the 1-meter springboard placing third with 239.93 points. Tara Walker finished fifth with 232.50 points and Saie West placed sixth with 207.98 points.

In the 3-meter, O'Connell lead the women placing second with 272.10 points. Laura Tierney and Sadie West placed fourth and fifth respectively.

Oscar Delgado again dominated the men's events in the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard scoring a 318.60 in the 1-meter and a 314.33 in the 3-meter.

Sophomore Zach Mills finished fifth in the 1-meter event with a score of 261.30. Christian Brienza placed fifth in the 3-meter with a score of 251.03 and Mills finished sixth with 231.60 points.
