Despite strong efforts by Damian Storz andAllison Schmid, a tough Brigham Young University swimming and diving teamdefeated the University of Wyoming on Saturday. The Cowgirls lost to BYU112-131, while Cowboys fell 82-161.
The women began the dual with a great start by defeating BYU in the200-medley relay. A team consisting of Jody Riskowski, Missy Lewis,Jennifer Schurz and Katie Haywood swam their way into first place with atime of 1:49.85.
Junior Allison Schmid put tremendous effort into the meet as she ended withtwo first place finishes in both the 200-freestyle (1:57.56) and the500-freestyle (5:19.73). Mabry Fiddler (junior) also finished the day witha victory. She won the 400-individual medley with a time of 4:42.22.
Riskowski finished the meet with second place in the 50-freestyle (24.65)and third in the 100-backstroke (1:00.41).
The Cowgirl divers finished well with Ashlie Niederer, Lindsay Ahrens andLauren Colaric getting second, third and fourth places, respectively.
"The women had a valiant effort today," said UW head coach Tom Johnson."We have never scored over 100 points against the BYU women. The diversgave us a great opportunity."
For the Cowboys, Damian Storz swam strong as he finished the dual with twofirst place finishes. He won the 400-individual medley (4:06.40) and the500-freestyle (4:47.48).
Also coming away with a win for the day were Jake Weidert in the1000-freestyle (10:10.07) and Scott Usher in the 100-breaststroke (57.67).Both times were individual season bests for the duo.
"The guys swam hard and that is the bottom line," said Johnson. "I toldthem that if you swim hard and try your best you have nothing to be ashamedof."
The Cowgirls remain home for one last time this season as they take onColorado State University on Friday, Feb. 1 at 5:00 PM in Corbett Pool.Both the men and women will then go to Denver for a dual against Metro StateUniversity on Feb. 2. The divers will be participating in the Air ForceAcademy Diving Invitational Feb. 1-2.
