The Cowgirl swimming and diving team dropped its first dual meet of the season as they lost to the defending Mountain West Conference Champion Utah Utes 134-100 at Ute Natatorium, Friday night in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Cowboys also lost to the Utes by a final score of 137-103.

With the loss the Cowgirls fall to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the MWC while the Cowboys drop to 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the conference. Utah's women improve to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the MWC while their men improve to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in conference action.

"I am disappointed with our performances tonight," said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "Utah was on their game and we didn't get up and race with them. It wasn't that we swam horribly, we just didn't step up to the level that is needed in order to compete with a tough team like Utah."

The Cowgirls struggled for most of the night and were unable to take a single event from the defending conference champion and undefeated Utes. However, the Cowgirls did have a second place finisher in nine events which kept the meet close.

The Cowboys took top honors in three events on the night. Senior Ron Fogel won the 200 butterfly (1:52.90), sophomore Alex Larkin won the 200 breaststroke (2:08.97) and senior John Lynch claimed the 3-meter diving event (335.55).

The Cowboys and Cowgirls will return to the water tomorrow as they take on BYU at 1 p.m. in Provo, Utah.
