LARAMIE, Wyo. -
At the 2008 Air Force Diving Invite, Stephanie Ortiz won the women's three-meter event and the UW divers combined for eight top-three finishes, Friday and Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colo.
"As a group we had a nice, solid weekend and had some great individual performances," said UW diving coach Ben Herdt. "Stephanie (Ortiz) had a career day today and put on a three-meter clinic which was very exciting. Allie (Smith) also is really coming along and had a nice weekend. For the men, we had a good showing and were solid from top to bottom. It is great to have four guys who can contribute the way that we do. All of the kids are doing some very exciting things right now which is great to see at this point in the season."
The highlight of the weekend for Wyoming was sophomore Stephanie Ortiz's first place finish in the women's three-meter event. She finished with the second highest score in UW history at 298.70. That mark was over 26 points higher than the second place finisher. Senior Brittany Wainwright placed third in the event with a score of 252.85.
In women's one-meter diving, freshman Allie Smith had the highest finish for the Cowgirls with a second place score of 261.70. Wainwright placed third with a score of 260.90 and Ortiz finished fourth with a score of 260.25.
For the Cowboys, junior Tyler Miller led the way with second place finish in the platform event (247.05) and a third place finish in both the one-meter (287.15) and the three-meter events (295.70). Freshman Kyle Bogner also had a top-three finish in the platform with the third highest score of 226.35.
The UW divers will return to the water next weekend as both the swimming and diving team hosts Colorado State and Air Force. The Cowgirls will dual with Colorado State on Friday and both the men and women will take on Air Force on Saturday.
