The University of Wyomingmen's and women's swimming and diving teams sufferedclose losses to the Air Force Academy, Saturday afternoon inColorado Springs. The men lost to the Falcons 119-122 whilethe women fell 127-116. This was the final dual meet of theseason before the Mountain West Conference Championships.
On the men's side of the meet the Cowboys won seven of 13events but were unable to win the meet. The Cowboys wereforced to swim without senior captain, Damian Storz who hadhis appendix removed Thursday morning. With the loss theCowboys finish the season with an overall dual record of 7-4and a MWC record of 2-2.
The Cowboys won one of the two relays events on the day.Gene Birks, Jon George, Ted Dibble and Brock Skarsgard cameaway with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay, with a timeof 3:08.82. Jake Weidert stepped up and filled Storz'sspot by winning the 1000 freestyle in a time of 9:58.07.Jerram Chudleigh had an extremely good day which includedthree event victories. He won the 200 freestyle with a timeof 1:41.56, the 200 butterfly in 1:49.52 and the 500freestyle in 4:40.02. Scott Usher won the 200 breaststrokewith a time of 2:06.21. Diver Adam Miller won the 1 meterdiving event with a score of 234.90.
"We are very disappointed about today, but I have to giveour kids a lot of credit," replied UW head coach TomJohnson. "It was a great meet and a great battle, we justended up on the wrong end of it.
"I have to give Jake Weidert a lot of credit for goingout there and battling the way he did and coming away with awin in the 1000 freestyle. Jerram swam like a champ againtoday. We were just thread pretty thin without Damian(Storz) but we still should have won this meet."
On the women's side of the meet the Cowgirls also wonseven of 13 events which included one of the two relayevents. The Cowgirl 400 medley relay team of JodyRiskowski, Missy Lewis, Ashley Mallett and Lindsay Springerswam a time of 4:00.97, which was good for the win. AllisonSchmid was a two event winner on the day. She won the 200IM in a time of 2:13.13 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:28.30. Jody Riskowski won yet another 50 freestyle event, thistime with a time of 25.02. Ashley Mallett won the 200butterfly with a time of 2:10.59. Janelyn Lilly also won anevent for Cowgirls, the 200 backstroke. Her time of 2:10.79was nearly six seconds faster then the closest Falcon. Onthe diving side of the meet Shea Boyle had an exceptionalday, winning the 3 meter board with a score of 239.25. Shealso placed second on the 1 meter board with a score of207.10. With the loss, the Cowgirls close the season outwith a 3-10 overall dual record and a MWC mark of 1-6.
"On the women's side of the meet, our seniors werestuds again today," said Johnson. "We looked tired outthere after yesterday, we just weren't nearly as fast aswe were yesterday. I have to give Shea Boyle a ton ofcredit, she is diving lights out right now.
"Obviously, we are disappointed about the losses but wehave to keep focused for the end. I feel very good aboutwhere we stand right now."
The University of Wyoming Diving team will return to actionnext weekend, as they will travel back to Colorado Springsfor the Falcon Cup diving meet on Feb. 8. The Swimmers willhave to wait until the Mountain West ConferenceChampionships to get back into the pool. The championshipswill begin on Feb. 19 and will run through the 22nd. Themeet will be held in Oklahoma City, Okla. on the campus ofOklahoma City Community College.
