Wyoming Swimming And Diving Teams Solid During Second Day At MWC Championships

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Sophomore Oscar Delgado placed second in the three-meter springboard(495.85) Thursday to pace allWyoming swimmers and divers at the Mountain West Conference Swimming andDiving Championships.

Although the Wyoming men remain in fifth-place in the team standingsthey have closed the gap and are only 16 points out of third-place. Byfar the Cowboys' strongest event of the day was the 200 IM, where fourPokes placed in the top ten. Senior Al Jarrell led the charge placingthird in the 200 IM with a time of 1:52.26. Freshman Damian Storz whois battling an illness placed fifth (1:52.80), freshman Jake Weiderttook seventh and junior Buddy Boysen placed eighth.

Freshman Ted Dibble swam his best race of the year picking up afifth-place finish in the 500 freestyle (4:33.95), an event he only swamtwice all year.

"The 200 IM was huge for us," said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "To havefour guys place in the top eight was big. Al (Jarrell) came fromseventh in the prelims to third was a huge effort for him. The men'steam very much realized the hole that they dug for themselves yesterdayand made some ground today and they need to do the same thing tomorrow."Johnson said.

The Cowgirls swimmers and divers fell back to fifth-place overall afterday two, but still managed to give some strong performances onThursday. Seniors Jen Rice (5:01.36) and Jessica Schiffl (5:04.51)finished fifth-sixth respectively in the 500 free to pace UW. SophomoreJennifer Schurz placed tenth in the 200 IM.

"The women swam very well today, I was very pleased with their effort,"Johnson said. "The 500 free was a very good event for us, it was nice tosee Jen Rice place where she did."

Brigham Young leads in the total team points in both the men's andwomen's standings going into the third day of competition on Friday.
