Freshman Damian Storz Takes Individual Title In 400 IM At MWC Championships

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Cowboy freshman Damian Storz(Woodlands, Calif.) won the individual title in the 400 IM Friday at theMountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships in OklahomaCity, Okla. Storz also qualified for the Olympic Trials and made theNCAA "B" cut with his time of 3:55.90.

The Wyoming men dominated the 400 IM as Storz's teammates senior AlJarrel and freshman Jake Weidert finished fourth and fifth respectively.Junior Buddy Boysen also qualified for the Olympic Trials and made theNCAA "B" cut in the 100 butterfly. Boysen, from Laramie, placed fourthin the 100 fly with a time a time of 48.96 and broke his own schoolrecord for the event with his time of 48.57 in the prelims.

Another UW freshman, Ted Dibble (Spring, Texas) placed fourth in the200 freestyle with his time of 1:40.29. As a team the Cowboys are stillin fifth-place overall with 346 points. BYU leads the men's standingswith 549 points.

The Cowgirl swimmers also had a solid day with freshman Angie Sax(Memphis, Tenn.) leading the way with her third-place finish in the 100butterfly. Sax shattered the UW school record in the event with hertime of 55.87, beating the old mark by over one second. She alsoqualified for the Olympic Trials and made the NCAA "B" cut. Fellowfreshman Darcrea Corey also broke a school record with her effort in the400 IM. Corey (Arvada, Colo.) placed-third with a time of 4:28.65.

Senior Jen Rice (Mishawaka, Ind.) gave a strong performance in the 200freestyle placing fourth with a time of 1:53.60, giving her the secondbest time in school history.

The Cowgirls remain in fifth-place in the overall team standings with292 points. Like the men, BYU leads the women's standings with 507points heading into the final day of competition.

"It was a huge day today," said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "We werevery pleased with our performances. It's been a great meet for ourswimmers. We've gotten some super efforts from the kids."
