LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Cowboys have moved up one position in the standings after competing in the third day of the Mountain West Conference swimming and diving tournament in Oklahoma City, Okla., placing them in fourth with 255 points. The Cowgirls remain in eighth place with 152 points. Brigham Young is leading both the men and women in the competition.
An immaculate showing by junior Damian Storz, of Woodland, Calif., placed him in the Mountain West Conference Championship record books as he finished the 400-individual medley in 3:53.85. Teammates Jake Weidert, Galen Gough and Jon McNeely all performed well in the same event. The trio finished in fifth, sixth and ninth places, respectively with individual season best times.
Guy Fulfer dominated the 200-freestyle, resulting in a third place finish (1:39.98). Also competing in the event were Ted Dibble, Grant Kritzinger and Jon George.
Six Cowboys demonstrated their skill in the 100-butterfly. Jerram Chudleigh finished in seventh place in 50.18, with Jake Rehard (50.65), Gough (50.71), Morgan Wardell (51.65), Jon Christianson (52.03) and Brad Leopold (53.26) all replacing their personal best times for the season.
Scott Usher is now third in UW history with his stellar finish in the 100-breaststoke with at 56.29 time. The 400-medley relay team, made up of Chudleigh, Usher, Rehard and Fulfer, finished in third to contribute to the teams great success for the day.
The Cowgirls had a strong day due to the efforts of several swimmers. Both Mabry Fiddler and Ashley Mallett began the day with individual best times in the 400-individual medley. Fiddler finished the event in sixth place (4:30.18) and Mallett finished in ninth (4:32.05).
Helja Vanhala took five seconds off her individual season best time in the 200-freestyle with a 1:53.34 time. In the same event, Allison Schmid also improved her quickest time to 1:54.73.
Janelyn Lilly set a new season personal best time in the 100-backstroke (58.27) finishing in tenth place, while Missy Lewis completed the 100-breaststroke in 1:06.54, giving her eleventh place.
A relay team of Lilly, Lewis, Jennifer Schurz and Vanhala completed the day's event in sixth place for the 400-medley relay, contributing several points to the final score.
The final day of competition for the MWC tournament will be held March 2.
