LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Oscar Delgado, a freshman diver for the University of Wyoming Swimming and Diving team has qualified to compete at the NCAA National Championships in Indianapolis March 25-27,1999.
Delgado, along with Wendy O'Connell and Tara Walker competed this past weekend at the Zone Diving Championships held in Phoenix, Arizona. The three divers that competed for Wyoming all dove extremely well. Delgado qualified for Nationals in the three meter springboard with 485.10 points, placing second. He will be the first diver to represent Wyoming at the NCAA Nationals in over ten years. Delgado also placed fourth in the one meter and seventh in the platform events.
"I am so extremely happy and proud of Oscar," said Head Diving Coach Carlos Jimenez. "He had such a great meet and gave such a tremendous effort to compete here and qualify for Nationals. There are only five guys who qualify from our zone that move onto nationals, and it is extremely difficult. I cannot say enough about Oscar and his performance, I am so proud of him."
Also competing at the Zone Championships were freshman Tara Walker and semester transfer Wendy O'Connell. Both women put in a great effort, just missing the finals. O'Connell finished 19th in the platform and 39th in the three meter, while Walker placed 38th in the three meter and 26th in the one meter.
"The girls came here and got experience," said Jimenez. "It says so much about the girls and their efforts to be here when you understand how difficult it is to move on to nationals. I am pleased with them and look forward to the next few years. This says so much about the program and that we are on the right track. We are excited for Oscar and thrilled to be on our way to Nationals."
The Men's NCAA National Swimming and Diving Championships will be held at Indiana University Natatorium at Indiana-Purdue University in Indianapolis, Indiana.
