Pre-Season Swimming Gets Underway

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Wyoming swimming teamcompeted in its first pre-season competiton of the year on Friday at CorbettPool. The Cowpoke Pentatholon is an intersquad competition with fiveevents, including the butterfly, individual medley, breast stroke,freestyle, and backstroke. The winners of the exhibition are Damian Storz,for the Cowboys, and Jennifer Schurz, Cowgirls.

Storz competed in all of the events with a combined time of 4:40.8. GrantKritzinger followed Storz with a second place finish (4:42.6). Rounding outthe top five were Jake Weidert (4:50.0), Guy Fulfer (4:53.8), and BradLeopold (4:54.3).

"I thought that we had a pretty good day today," said UW head coach TomJohnson. "It was a really close race for the third, fourth, and fifthslots."

Schurz came away with a win on her 22nd birthday with a combined time of5:17.4. The second place finish went to Allison Schmid with a time of5:25.5. Mabry Fiddler (5:26.1), Crystal Mecham (5:33.3), and Janelyn Lilly(5:35.0) finished with the third, fourth and fifth spots respectively.

"I was really impressed with Jennifer today," Johnson said. "Overall Ithought we swam pretty well from top to bottom. We just have to work ongetting better and getting in better condition and being more aggressive inour racing."

The swimming and diving teams compete in the Brown vs. Gold pre-seasoncompetition on October 12th at 4:00 pm in Corbett Pool.
