LARAMIE, Wyo. - The University of Wyoming swimteam opened the 2004-05 season by hosting the annual CowpokePentathlon, Friday evening at Corbett Pool.
Sophomore Heidi Thorson and junior Gene Birks turned in the fastesttimes on the day, earning first place finishes.
On the Cowgirl side of the meet, Thorson swam to a first placecombined time of 5:11.05. She swam a 1:01.00 in the backstroke, a1:01.14 in the IM, a 1:00.23 in the butterfly, a 54.69 in thefreestyle and a breaststroke time of 1:13.99. Freshman LindseyRussenberger finished second in a combined time of 5:15.30, whilesophomore Lauren Beard (5:18.14), sophomore Erin Spadinger (5:18.90)and junior Shelbi Settlage (5:21.92) rounded out the top-five.
For the Cowboys, Birks finished with a combined time of 4:26.52. Heswam to a time of 53.32 in the backstroke, 53.47 in the IM, 51.24 inthe butterfly, 47.58 in the freestyle and 1:00.91 in the breaststroke.
Freshman Carl Marais finished second in a combined time of 4:40.04,while senior Grant Kritzinger (4:42.05), freshman Sam King (4:43.52)and sophomore Dan Jones (4:48.82) rounded out the top-five.
The swimming and diving teams will return to action next Friday, whenthey close out the exhibition portion of their schedule with the Brownvs. Gold meet. The meet is set to begin at 4 p.m. at Corbett Pool.
Both teams open the regular season at the Colorado State Early BirdClassic, Oct. 22-23, in Ft. Collins, Colo.
