The University of Wyoming swimming and diving teams competed in the Brown versus Gold intrasquad meet on Friday. The Brown squad defeated the Gold squad 234 to 229.
Leading the way for the Brown team was freshman Carl Marais. Marais was a multi-event winner as he won the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 1:55.30 and the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.66.
Sophomore Tamara Lehnertz also had a good showing for the Brown team as she also took first in two individual events and she also helped the Brown squad win the women 400 yard freestyle relay.
Individually on the Gold side junior Gene Birks swam to two first place finishes in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events. Birks finished with times of 21.51 in the 50 and 46.25 in the 100. Junior Alex Leziy-Miller won two events of her own for the Gold squad.
Leziy-Miller won the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:13.38 and the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:26.71.
Senior Grant Kritzinger was the team captain for the Brown team for the second consecutive year.
"We had alot of people sick today, but we had people step up and make a big impact on our team," said Kritzinger. "It came down to three or four points on the guys side and that is great to get us ready for next weekend."
The women's team captain was junior Toni Elliott. Elliott was part of the winning 400 yard freestyle relay team for Brown.
"It was really fun to go out there and swim in a meet like situation with your teammates, especially when it is this close. We saw alot of good things and also some things that we can improve on," added Elliott.
The UW swimmers will compete next weekend at the Early Bird Invite in Fort Collins, Colo.
