After three days of competition in Las Vegas, the Cowgirl swimmers finished in fourthplace out of seventeams and the Cowboys finished in second place out of four teams. They were competing in the UNLV Invite Nov. 29 - Dec. 1.
The competition began with the 400-medley relay, where a Cowgirl team consisting of Jody Riskowski, Missy Lewis, Jennifer Schurz and KatieHaywood finished in third place with a 3:59.29 time for their season best time.
Riskowski (junior) and Haywood (sophomore) swam well in the 50-freestyle, as Riskowski swam into the school record books with the secondbest time (24.26) and Haywood with her season best time with 24.80.
"This is the best group of 50-freestyle (swimmers) we've had in two years," said head coach Tom Johnson. "This was even faster than what weswam at conference last year."
Allison Schmid, Kristin Lewis, Ashley Mallett and Erin Hennings finished well in the 500-freestyle. All ended with their season best times of5:11.65, 5:19.57, 5:20.02 and 5:26.28, respectively.
"Kristin Lewis stepped up and now is swimming at her potential," said Johnson. "Erin Hennings swam her lifetime best in the 500-freestyle. Weare very pleased with that."
Mabry Fiddler finished in first place in the 400-individual medley with her season best time of 4:33.10. Schmid and Mallett also did well in therace as they finished 4:38.03 and 4:42.06, respectively.
Fiddler also competed well with season best times in both the 1650-freestyle (17:38.45) and the 200-breaststroke (2:23.28).
Damian Storz competed well all weekend, as he finished first in the 1650-freestyle (16:04.00) and second in both the 500-freestyle (4:36.52) and400-individual medley (4:09.13) with all being season best times.
In the 50-freestyle, Guy Fulfer finished in fourth place with a 21.25 time and Jon George finished with his season best time of 21.85.
Fulfer finished in second in the 200-freestyle (1:42.98) and Grant Kritzinger finished in fourth (1:44.45). The duo also competed well in the100-freestyle with Fulfer finishing in third place and Kritzinger in fourth place.
"In the 100-freestyle, we had a great race against one of the better teams in our conference (UNLV)," said Johnson. "We are continually gettingbetter in that and I am very pleased with the way that we are swimming."
John McNeely swam well over the weekend as he finished with a season best time in the 100-breaststroke (1:00.35) and a lifetime best time inthe 400-individual medley (4:20.78).
Per Malmberg finished third in the 1650-freestyle with a season low 16:37.68.
McNeely, Brad Leopold and Josh Storey finished in the fourth, fifth and sixth spots respectively in the 200-backstroke.
The Cowgirls return to Laramie on Dec. 8 as they take on the University ofKansas in Corbett Pool at noon. Both teams then go to Irvine, Calif.to begin their Christmas Training.
