Swimmers Race at the Speedo Cup

The Cowgirl and Cowboy swim teams proved that they can compete against the best in the country this past weekend, December 3-5, at the Speedo Cup in Long Beach, California.

Both teams were represented by a small squad of nine athletes that competed in the three day meet. Those athletes were Jaime LaBrayere, Jen Weidert, Emily Hollon, Bethany Larsen, Ashley West, Jen Schurz, Jen Rice, Jessica Schiffl,Theresa Nakao and Carrie Behrens for the women. For the men Jake Rehard, Phil Rehard, Mickey Aberle, Mike Hembree, Robert Boysen, Guy Fulfer, Al Jarrell, and Collin Wallace.

Jessica Schiffl lead the way for the women throughout the competition placing second in the 1650 Freestyle (10:24.75), 3rd in the 500 Free (5:01.54), and 9th in the 400 IM (4:43.11).

Jennifer Rice placed fifth in the 1650 Free (10:31.98), 6th in the 500 Free with a time of 5:07.62, and 7th in the 200 Free (1:55.68).

The women consistently placed swimmers in the top twenty in most events, giving the women the boost they need toward clinching a conference title. In the 200 Back, Freshman Ashley West placed 14th (2:13.12) with teammate Jaime LaBrayere in 48th (2:19.35). West also placed 19th in the 100 Back (1:01.23).

Junior Emily Hollon was 10th in the 100 Free (54.52) and 18th in the 50 Free (25.17). Senior Bethany Larsen was 18th (54.94) in the 100 Free and 21st in the 50 Free (25.35). Senior Theresa Nakao was 10th in the 200 Breaststroke with a time of 2:27.91, and Jennifer Schurz was 23rd with a time of 2:32.82. Schurz also placed 7th in the 200IM with a time of 2:11.10.

Junior Jennifer Weidert finished 13th in the 200 Fly with a 2:12.56 and 18th in the 400 IM (4:45.13).

The women's relay teams competed well finishing 4th and 23rd in the 400 Free Relay with times of 3:35.98 and 3:47.42 respectively. The 200 Free Relay team of Larsen, Hollon, LaBrayere and Schurz placed 7th (1:40.67) and the team of Rice, Nakao, Weidert and West placed 28th (1:46.06). The 400 Medley Relay team of West, Nakao, Schurz and Hollon was 9th (4:04.91) with teammates LaBrayere, Weidert,Schiffl and Larsen placing 26th (4:12.84). The 800 Free Relay the team of Rice, Hollon, Schurz and Schiffl placed 5th with a time of 7:53.04.

The men also competed well against some of the best teams in the NCAA. Senior Mike Hembree was 13th in the 500 Free (4:40.56), 21st in the 100 Back (54.99) and 13th in the 200 Back (1:57.53). Mickey Aberlefinished 18th in the 200 IM (1:56.61), 20th in the 100 Breast (59.53) and the 200 Breast (2:11.02).

Freshman Guy Fulfer swam well for the Cowboys placing in the top half of the competiton, namely the 100 Free (48.17) the 500 Free (4:55.85), and the 200 Free (1:44.08). Along with Fulfer, freshman teammate Jake Rehard placed well in the competition in the 100 Free (48.59), the 100 Fly (53.35). Other top Cowboy finishers were Al Jarrell, Phil Rehard, and Collin Wallace.

The men's relay teams also placed high throughout the competition with the team of Hembree, Aberle,Boysen and Wallace finishing 7th in the 200 Medley Relay (1:36.61), and the team of Wallace, Aberle, J.Rehard, and Fulfer finishing 8th in the 200 Free Relay (1:27.18). In the 400 Free Relay, the team of J.Rehard, boysen, P.Rehard and Jarrell finished 23rd (3:22.18).
