DENVER, Colo. - Senior Derek Campbell and sophomore Ryan Nelson earned the Western Athletic Conference weekly honors Wednesday afternoon, announced by the conference office. Campbell was named Diver of the Week for the third time this season. Nelson became the second Cowboy to be named Swimmer of the Week.
Campbell, a senior from Laramie, Wyo., finished second on the 3-meter springboard with a score of 372.55 at the Air Force Diving Invitational last Friday. It was his second-highest total of the season in the event. Campbell battled back in the finals after placing sixth in the preliminaries earlier in the afternoon. On Saturday, he finished eighth on the 1-meter board (311.40), before posting a fifth-place finish on the platform with a score of 292.70. His mark in the event was a personal best and the third best in school history.
Nelson, a sophomore from Huntington Beach, Calif., helped Wyoming to a 149-149 tie at UNLV on Saturday. Nelson won all three of his individual events in the meet. He opened up with a victory in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:29.09, the fourth-fastest time in the WAC this season. He then won the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:48.31 and completed the trifecta with a win in the 500 free (4:34.60).
CollegeSwimmming.com released its weekly national polls on Wednesday morning. The Cowboys are ranked No. 35 in this week's pool. The Cowgirls also appear in the rankings at No. 40.
