March 11, 2009

Starting Thursday, the University of Wyoming diving team will compete at the 2009 NCAA Zone "E" Championships in Austin, Texas. Three Cowgirls and three Cowboys will represent UW and dive for a chance to be in the NCAA Championships.

Zone "E" consists of 35 schools from 11 states in the West Region that include Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

Stephanie Ortiz, Emily Huth and Allie Smith will be on the women's side, while Tyler Miller, Mark Murdock, and Kyle Bogner will represent the Cowboys.

"It will be a tough weekend for us with excellent competition," said UW diving coach Ben Herdt. "Stephanie and Mark have chances of moving on, but everyone is diving well right now. This is a field of talented divers from the West Region."

Last time out for the Wyoming divers was at the 2009 MWC Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla. Ortiz was named MWC Co-Diver of the year, and won the three-meter diving championship with a score of 320.95. Emily Huth was close behind in second.

For the Cowboys Murdock placed second on platform and third on three meter at conference. Bogner and Miller were second and third respectively on one-meter and placed in the top eight on each board.

Coach Herdt was selected as both the men's and women's MWC Diving Coach of the Year.

The top six men, and top seven women will advance to the NCAA Championships that are held in College Station, Texas on March 19-21 for women, and March 26-28 for men. Thursdays events will be men's one-meter and women's three-meter.
