LARAMIE, Wyo. -
University of Wyoming sophomore swimmer George Eglesfield will compete in the New Zealand Open Championships this week in Auckland, New Zealand. He will compete in the 50, 100 and 200 butterfly events in the long-meter course. Eglesfield is taking aim at a spot on the New Zealand National team for the Commonwealth Games in Scotland and the Pan Pacific Championships in Sydney, Australia.
"It will be exciting for George to go back home and race in front of his family and friends," head coach Tom Johnson said. "He is a great long-course swimmer and he is in great shape and he is ready to go as assistant coach Noguchi has done a great job getting him ready for the meet."
Eglesfield won the 200 butterfly event at the Western Athletic Conference Championships in March with a school-record mark of 1:45.22. His time in the race was the fastest by a Cowboy since Tyler Kybartas in 2009. He also earned First Team All-WAC in the 100 butterfly.
He ranks third in New Zealand in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.23 and fourth in 200 butterfly at 2:02.18. He also comes into the event ranking 19th in the 50 butterfly.
The New Zealand Open Championships begin Tuesday, wrapping up Friday. Eglesfield will compete in the 200 butterfly Tuesday, the 50 butterfly Wednesday and finishes the event Thursday with the 100 butterfly.
