University of Wyoming freshman women's swimmer Nicole Hlavacek has been selected to participate in the 2013 USA Swimming National Open Water Select Camp, the organization announced Wednesday. She becomes the first-ever UW swimmer to be selected to the National Open Water Camp and is one of 24 swimmers and 12 female swimmers attending. She earned her place after swimming a 17:01.77 in the 1500-meter freestyle at the Speedo Junior Nationals in August of 2012. Hlavacek will travel to Fort Meyers, Fla., to take part in the camp June 4-8 that will be hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University. UW assistant and distance group coach Manny Noguchi will be accompanying Hlavacek to the camp.

"Nicole is one of 12 female swimmers to be selected to this camp and it is a very great honor she is the first-ever UW swimmer to be selected," Noguchi said. "She has had a tremendous year this year starting last summer with her long course time that earned her this selection. This is a really honorable selection for the distance program here at Wyoming. I also have to give a lot of credit to her club coach Jim Nickell, who has done an excellent job with her.

For me to be able to go with Nicole will be a tremendous honor and I am very grateful for (head coach Tom Johnson) to give me the opportunity to go. It really means a lot, but ultimately it is the athletes like Nicole that make me look good. I am very excited for her future since she is only a freshman."

USA Swimming selected eight male and eight female athletes for the camp from the top 2012 times in the Swims database in the 1500-meter long course freestyle. An additional four male and four female athletes were selected off the results of the 2012 5K National Open Water Championships. The National Open Water Camp is viewed as an integral step for athletes to move from the pool to Open Water, then later to the international scene.
